Among the Pskov towers erected at the beginning of the 16th century, the gigantic Pokrovskaya Tower, located on the banks of the Great River, stands out. It has existed since the construction of the first fortifications of the Okolny city, which surrounded the city in 1465 with a multi-kilometer ribbon of the fortress.

It was in this tower on the third tier that the main gun of Pskov stood - the Randomysh peep (gun) weighing 4.5 tons. The tower is unique in that its first tier is cut down right in the rock on which the structure stands. Its outer circumference of 90 m is particularly striking. It is one of the largest towers in Europe, and it has no such towers in the North-West of Russia.

At the foot of the Pokrovskaya tower rumors were dug - special trenches. They were dug up during the Livonian War to conduct mine wars. Legends have been circulating about these undermines for a long time. The most popular one tells about how there are entire underground passages stretched under the Great River: from the Pokrovskaya tower to the other side. Scientists failed to verify this - everywhere there are dead ends and littered passages.
