The city of Porkhov is located on the Shelon lowland, on the Shelon river (the basin of Lake Ilmen), 88 kilometers east of Pskov. It has been known since 1239 as a city within the Novgorod Republic - “Prince Alexander from Novgorod, chop down the town on Shelon”. The name comes from the word "paroh", "pork" - a white stone (limestone).
